Technical Designer/ Pattern Maker

For full package and non-full package styles, this role is responsible for ensuring that garments meet aesthetic, fit, construction and workmanship requirements for the design through production approval process, within established timelines for assigned product line. 


Proto Development

  • Create and maintain proto tech packs (for full package), or 1st patterns (for non-full package) from design sketches that ensure first proto samples meet design’s intent on styling, fit and construction.
  • Tech packs to include detailed construction sketches and instructions, tolerances, graded measurement specifications, how to measure sketches on an exception basis, BOM, and any special handling instructions.
  • Utilize the block library and construction standards wherever applicable. 
  • Write fit comments that include technical direction on how to improve the fit and construction of a garment.
  • Provide accurate patterns to cutting and sewing departments.
  • Trouble-shoot potential production issues to resolve before samples are made, for aesthetic and cost purposes.

Production Approval

  • Provide pattern and garment measurements for non-full package styles on pattern card.
  • Incorporate production issue resolutions back into the proto development process for future seasons.
  • Maintain all grading, construction, how to measure, and procedural standards.
  • Escalate any requested design changes that impact standards, cost or aesthetics from the samples to Management and Production team so that cost analysis can be accomplished & change can be addressed.


  • Effectively run fittings.


  • Track workload at each stage.  Proactively escalate issues of high fit iterations issues to management to get help to resolve efficiently.

Sample Management

  • Follow sample management guidelines.


  • Five years’ experience in apparel industry in a Technical Design and Pattern Making capacity.
  • Proficient in medium to complex pattern making and draping skills.
  • Experience in interpreting design sketches into tech packs required.
  • Experience in interpreting Design fit direction into production ready patterns and direction to international factories required.
  • Effective verbal and written technical communication skills required.
  • Ability to be flexible in a multiple-task environment with a sense of urgency to meet development and production timelines.
  • Must be highly organized, detail oriented and experienced in proactive problem solving.
  • Strong woven and knit experience preferred.
  • Garment dye experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Design / Apparel Engineering / Pattern Making, or equivalent training combined with work experience.

Additionally, to perform this job successfully, the employee should have knowledge of:

  • Accumark 8.2 (Gerber)
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Photoshop preferred, but not required
  • PDM experience preferred, but not required
  • Illustrator preferred, but not required
